Alice Vaughan (UK) – presentation & discussion

— Site-specific art: discussing the ways that visual artists can benefit from the opportunity of
using vacant space, and how it can inform and influence their practice.

— Dual use spaces: how empty spaces and disused buildings can be the perfect vehicle to help an artist transfer their practice from studio to exhibition.

— How pop-up events and temporary projects can benefit any organisation, especially when
combined with a creative activity – eg. a charity fundraiser, workshop or exhibition.

Water Tower in Lozenets

Martin Mikush
Design charrette
or a quick community visualization – Presentation & Discussion

Topic: The water tower, its reviving and restoration, the surrounding areas – how is that connected to the tower and the life in the neighborhood. Could that serve as a catalyst for positive changes in the city?
Guests invited: Losenets District mayor, Losenets District Head architect, a designer, a gardener, an architect, an artist (painter) and a journalist, all living in the area. Elderly, influential people, who know the history of Losenets. Moms and their children, who often visit the nearby playgrounds.
Objective: Through one or more sessions to build and focus a community vision for the venue and the water tower. To turn that vision into a graphic representation in an understandable language: hand-drawn sketches, examples from other venues, and if needed, possibly placing signs on certain spots to indicate the changes suggested.

Garreth Bell Jones (UK)
Curatorial workshop with final presentation on the 27th (Wednesday) from 15:00 h

Gareth is Artists and Programmes Curator at Wysing Arts Centre, outside of Cambridge. An RCA graduate he has an interesting independent practice as a curator and writer, and he is doing great and ambitious things out of Wysing, including the establishment of mini-festivals.

Gareth Bell-Jones joined Wysing Arts Centre in April 2010 and has since been delivering all aspects of the Escalator Visual Arts programme. Gareth has a background in History of Art, with a focus on contemporary art and curating, graduating from UCL in 2005 and from the RCA Curating Contemporary Art MA in the summer of 2010. As a member of the exhibitions team Gareth played a key role in the planning and production of his cohort’s graduating exhibition John Smith: Solo Show which was widely considered to be one of the most successful produced by the graduating students in recent years. Prior to joining the MA programme Gareth was Curator at Tricycle Gallery, London, where he was responsible for curating and organising an ongoing programme of exhibitions and projects over three years. He has written articles for Artvehicle and Contemporary Magazine and chaired symposiums at Iniva and Café Oto. Current projects include an ongoing collaboration with Atopia Projects on a critical reader about Victor Vasarely’s Architectural Integrations with an exhibition planned for Galerie Iff in Marseilles. Gareth is also currently Assistant Curator at Sound Threshold, with whom he has worked on projects with Flat Time House, Resonance 104.4FM and Sound and Music.

Workshop description:
Over the course of the three days he will first give an introduction to his practice and where he works. For participants is also possible to do short presentations on their practices.
After this he would be able to introduce the work of several artists and look at the space at the Water tower together and decide on what artwork would work best and how best to show it. This would be discursive. Then the participants will install and make the artwork together and will end up with a complete exhibition of contemporary art that the participants have collectively curated and installed.

Digging Deeper / Creativity Workshop

Following the white rabbit … we will be digging deeper to reach to the hidden treasures of creativity. The proposed creativity workshop will invite its participants to think creatively with words and pictures. They will be encouraged to generate solutions to creative thinking tasks inspired by the theme of Alice in Wonderland. These activities will give them a chance to use their imagination in thinking up ideas and putting them together in various ways. The workshop is open to the WTAF participants and its guests and offers them a unique possibility to participate in a collective creative performance.
